Colorful and fragrant lip balm

Formula: 09348

Phase Ingredients for ~6 ml of balm Quantity
A shea butter 5 gr
A almond oil 6 gr
A alkanet root powder 1 gr
B beeswax 2 gr
C aromatic strawberry extract 10 drops
C vitamin E 1 drop

Sanitize the dedicated containers and utensils you will work with, details in the general safety guidelines.

In a heat-resistant glass add the ingredients of phase A. Place the glass in a water bath and keep it there for approximately 15 minutes (on low heat) for hot maceration of the alkanet powder, which will release a large part of the coloring substances. Stir occasionally.

After 15 minutes, remove the glass from the water bath and let the composition rest for 5 minutes, the time required to decant the alkanet powder. During this time do not stir.

Phase A is filtered as follows (see also the images below):
Prepare 4 layers of gauze, which are placed in a tea strainer. Place the strainer on another heat-resistant glass. Pour phase A into the strainer, slowly, so that the remnants of the alkanet powder remain largely in the original beaker.

Add the beeswax over the filtered phase A and place the glass in the water bath until the wax melts, stirring in the meantime.
The glass is removed from the water bath and the ingredients of phase C are added to the composition. Stir vigorously for approximately 15-20 seconds after which the composition is poured, in a single movement, into the lip balm tube.

The tube filled with lip balm is left to rest until the balm has visibly solidified on the surface. Put the lid on and then place in the fridge for approximately 20 minutes.

The result is a soft, naturally flavored, emollient and nourishing lip balm. Gives a slight lip color but without the specific coating given by a lipstick.

Options and explanations:

  • the previous version of the recipe contained beet powder, an ingredient that we no longer have on offer and which was difficult to work with, so for coloring we used another vegetable ingredient, namely alkanet powder
  • we used refined shea butter for this recipe, but you can work just as well with the unrefined one
  • instead of almond oil, you can use another vegetable oil, such as apricot kernel, sesame, macadamia or jojoba oil
  • any other aromatic extract can be used instead of the strawberry extract

We also formulated the vegan version of this balm, you can find it here, which contains cocoa butter, another vegetable oil and wax.
