Rosemary antioxidant extract - description, recommendations

Rosemary extract has recognised antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used for delaying the oxidation process of cosmetics, vegetable or essential oils. It is a concentrated composition containing between 13 - 15% phenolic diterpenes of which more than 9% carnosic acid.

Obtaining method: by CO₂ extraction
About CO₂ extraction: it is an environmentally friendly, clean, high-tech method, approved by organic certification bodies, which allows a higher yield than cold pressing. The method guarantees maximum purity of the extract, no alteration and no damage to the plant's compounds. Carbon dioxide is inert, odourless, non-toxic and available indefinitely.
During CO₂ extraction, substances sensitive to higher temperatures remain intact and compounds with oxidative potential are not affected due to the exclusion of oxygen.
A very important advantage is the longer shelf life of these oils obtained by CO₂ extraction compared to those obtained by pressing, maceration or even distillation.

Origin: natural, produced in accordance with European Regulation 1334/2008 for aromatic preparations for food use

Main constituents: 13-15% phenolic diterpenes of which >9% carnosic acid; < 2% essential oil containing: < 0.1% limonene, < 0.05% linalool, < 20 ppm methyl eugenole
The extract is standardised in organic sunflower oil.

Organoleptic properties: viscous liquid at room temperature, cloudy, characteristic odour, yellow-brown colour. At low temperatures the product may solidify, before use it should be warmed for fluidization.

Solubility: insoluble in water, soluble in oils

Properties of rosemary extract

How to use it

• as an antioxidant agent in oils: 0.05 to 0.1% for saturated fats (oils and butters more resistant to oxidation) and 0.2 to 0.4% for polyunsaturated fatty acids (oils sensitive to oxidation)
• typical dosage 0.3% in cosmetic preparations containing a fatty phase
• typical dosage 0.3% in anhydrous compositions
• as an anti-inflammatory, regenerating and antioxidant ingredient in preparations for the care of problematic skin, anti-aging compositions, 0.1-0.3%
• has no influence on the pH of compositions

Compatibility with other ingredients

• good: emulsifiers, co-emulsifiers, gums
• good: all preservatives in the Elemental offer
• together with vitamin E act synergistically

Antioxidant dosage examples

• per 100 gr cosmetic preparation 0.3% means 0.3 gr/ ~10 drops
• for 100 gr oxidation-resistant vegetable oil 0.1% means 0.1 gr/ ~3 drops
• for 100 gr oxidation sensitive vegetable oil 0,4% means 0,4 gr / ~12 drops
