Whitening toothpaste, anti-tartar

Phase Ingredients for ~ 50 ml Quantity
A white clay 28 gr
A orris root powder 1,8 gr
A bamboo powder 2 gr
A sodium bicarbonate 2 gr
A Cocamidopropyl betaine, powder 0,3 gr
B flat mineral water 22 gr
B glycerin, vegetable 4 gr
C xylitol 5 gr
C peppermint essential oil 8 drops
C sage or clove leaf essential oil 1-2 drops
C cosgard 13 drops

Sanitize the dedicated containers and utensils you will work with, details in the general safety guidelines.

Preparation method:

Add and mix the ingredients of phase A in a bowl. In another bowl mix the ingredients of phase B. Pour the solution of phase B over phase A and mix well until a homogeneous paste is obtained. Add the ingredients from phase C, mixing after each. If the paste is too soft or too hard, the consistency can be adjusted with a little clay or glycerin. The toothpaste thus prepared is transferred to the dedicated container.

A toothpaste with a higher abrasiveness than those prepared with calcium carbonate. It is foaming well and tastes sweet. The aroma is of medium intensity, mentholated and slightly medicinal.

Options and explanations:

  • for a more intense aroma, the number of drops of peppermint essential oil can be supplemented
  • for people under homeopathic treatment, peppermint essential oil can be replaced with another essential oil: lime, sweet fennel (small amount) or orange essential oil
  • sage essential oil can be replaced with myrrh, cinnamon, clove leaf or tea tree essential oil
  • glycerin can be removed from the recipe, but a binding agent such as guar gum is needed, approximately 0.2 g in phase B, and the amount of water will be supplemented accordingly
  • the surfactant can be removed from the formula, the toothpaste will not be frothy in this case
White clay is a gentle, mineral-rich abrasive. Orris root powder is known for effective cleaning of enamel, removes some stains, and is mainly used for toothpastes dedicated to smokers. Bamboo powder contains vegetable silicone, it is mildly abrasive. Cocamidopropyl betaine is a washing agent, foaming, also approved in certified organic toothpastes. Baking soda cleans intensively, helps with the removal of tartar and cleaning of tooth enamel. The essential oils provide a specific aroma, are antiseptic, astringent and stimulate blood circulation; sage and cloves have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. Xylitol is a sweetener of plant origin with anti-caries properties, its effectiveness in oral hygiene is demonstrated; it prevents the formation of dental plaque, it does not allow the metabolism of some bacteria, it encourages the remineralization of teeth.
