MIXED skin

MIXED skin

Mixed skin has normal or dry skin in areas with rare sebaceous glands (cheekbones, maxillary area of the cheeks) and excess sebum in areas with frequent sebaceous glands, on the center line of the face, the famous T-area - forehead, nose and chin. Selecting the right cosmetics is more difficult when there is a big difference between the two areas, they should be treated differently. Mixed skin is often sensitive skin. When applying cosmetics, the condition of non-oily skin areas should also be taken into account, they can be with normal, slightly dry or very dry skin. If there is a big difference between the areas, the cause can be the application of inappropriate cosmetics, cleaning with products that exfoliate, dry, irritate. If the skin is normal outside the T-zone then cleansing and skin care is much easier. In conclusion, the mixed skin care routine may differ from person to person, the correct actions can be identified if the skin reaction to the applied cosmetics is consistently followed and acted upon as such.

Mixed skin care routine

CLEANSING, MAKEUP REMOVAL - twice a day

Even if you do not wear makeup, the skin should be cleaned. In fact, the term make-up removal covers in common parlance the cleansing of the face, not just the removal of the make-up. It is an essential step in any skin care routine. It is recommended to cleanse the skin in the evening to remove dirt from the environment, pollution, makeup and release the skin of secretions, dead cells, excess sebum and in the morning  to release the skin of sebum and secreted toxins. Compositions that stimulate sebum secretion but also those that dry excessively should be avoided.

HOW and WITH WHAT KIND OF PRODUCTS?

  • remove makeup with an oily, biphasic cleanser or even with a vegetable oil, especially if the makeup contains lipstick and water-resistant mascara. A cleansing milk (fluid emulsion) can also be used. After cleansing, micellar water can be used to remove traces
  • the skin is cleaned with a cleanser (cleansing gel) suitable for mixed skin, which contains surfactants. Some cleansers do not require rinsing, but for maximum comfort we recommend rinsing the skin with clean water
  • the next step is the application of a toner (it can be a floral water: rosemary, lavender, witch hazel) or a seboregulatory tonic lotion, but also moisturizing
  • ideally, in case of large differences between the two areas, they should be treated separately, for example do not apply an astringent toner on dry areas, or you can insist more on the T area and less on the rest when cleansing

SKINCARE - daily

During the day, apply a non-greasy, moderately emollient cream with a lighter texture. It is recommended to contain a few oils (the more "dry" kind), antioxidants, ingredients that balance the secretion of sebum, oils with a higher GLA content. Instead of the day cream, a tonic lotion may be enough if it contains moisturizing and antioxidant ingredients. At night you can apply a cream, daily or 2-3 times a week. Generally, 15 minutes after applying a night cream on mixed skin, the T-area will be wiped off with a towel (even slightly damp) or the cream will be applied outside the T-area and in the eye area. The night cream can be replaced with a facial oil consisting of a mix of oils suitable for mixed or oily skin + fat-soluble vitamins + possibly anti-aging, regenerating ingredients and so on. Test some solutions and apply the ones you like.

HOW and WITH WHAT KIND OF PRODUCTS?

  • for hydration, light creams formulated from ingredients suitable for mixed skin will be used, among which we mention: witch hazel or lavender water, squalane, aloe vera gel, vitamins (especially niacinamide), cucumber extract, Marine-Z
  • recommended vegetable oils : jojoba oil, hemp, kukui, watermelon, borage, yangu, macadamia, raspberry
  • essential oils that can be used are those with specific action, such as: rosemary, bergamot, lavender, petitgrain

EXFOLIATION - weekly or more often

Exfoliation can be performed mechanically or by chemical action. Deep cleansing helps remove dead cells, refines the texture of the skin, rids the skin of impurities, smoothes the surface of the skin. Mechanical exfoliation is recommended once a week. Exfoliation by chemical action can be done once a week or even daily; it depends on the condition of the skin and the concentration of the exfoliating ingredient. The exfoliating solution can be applied in the evening or in the morning. If applied in the morning, it should be 10-15 minutes before applying the day cream. It is not usually rinsed, but the gel exfoliants will be rinsed 10-15 minutes after application for skin comfort.

HOW and WITH WHAT KIND OF PRODUCTS?

  • mechanical exfoliation is performed with a cream or gel type composition, which contains vegetable fibers, granules or various seeds chosen according to skin tolerance: ground seeds, strawberry seeds, hibiscus flower exfoliant, jojoba pearls
  • chemical exfoliation is done with the help of AHA or BHA acids which are applied in the form of a gel, lotion or aqueous solution. The concentration of acids will be determined according to skin tolerance, following the indications in the product sheet or in the recipe

MASKS - weekly or more often

Depending on the condition of the skin, you can opt for a purifying, absorbent mask (on the T zone), soothing, nourishing, vitaminizing, etc. The mask is applied on well-cleansed and dry skin and left for approximately 10 minutes (before feeling discomfort or tightening) then remove with lukewarm water and wipe the face with a cotton pad.

HOW and WITH WHAT KIND OF PRODUCTS?

  • before applying a mask, a facial sauna can be helpful, for the duration of 5-10 minutes or less, if the non-greasy areas are dehydrated or sensitive, with 1-3 drops of essential oil in hot water or with a herbal infusion
  • ideal would be a weekly application of a mask of two components: one part for the T-zone, the other part for the area with normal or dry skin. Ingredients: white clay, green clay, crushed fresh fruit, cucumber juice, lemon juice, yogurt, alum stone, witch hazel water, vitamin C, egg whites - on fatty areas, and honey, avocado, egg yolk, vegetable oils, seaweed - on dry areas
  • a simple clay mask plus water can be applied daily on the T-zone, for sebum absorption
